Understanding the categories (PEP, Sanctions, and Adverse Media)
When you perform a LexisNexis screening in Uniify, the customer is checked against the WorldCompliance database. To accurately assess the results, it is essential to understand the different categories involved in the screening.
PEP: Politically Exposed Persons
A PEP is an individual who holds, or has held, a prominent public position. Due to their influence, they are considered to be at a higher risk for potential involvement in bribery or corruption. This includes heads of state, members of parliament, judges, and high-ranking officials.
The screening also covers Relatives and Close Associates (RCA). This means that family members and close business associates are also checked, as funds are often channeled through these connections.
Sanctions
Sanctions are the most critical category in your compliance process. These are economic or trade restrictions imposed by international organizations such as the UN and EU. A match on a sanctions list typically means it is illegal to provide funds or economic resources to that person. We screen against all major global lists, including OFAC (USA) and HM Treasury (UK).
Adverse Media
This category scans over 30,000 global news sources to see if an individual is linked to illegal activities. The system specifically looks for reports on money laundering, fraud, drug trafficking, or terrorism financing. This allows you to identify risks before they potentially appear on an official sanctions list.
Enforcement
This list includes individuals wanted by authorities or those who have received regulatory restrictions. This includes data from Interpol, FBI, Europol, and national financial supervisory authorities.
